Teams go low as PGA of Ontario Closes out

BRAMPTON, ON - Some like it hot, but that wouldn’t be any way to close out the season at the Nike Golf PGA of Ontario Fall Scramble presented by FlightScope.

One hundred and ninety-eight PGA of Ontario members teed it up Tuesday on both the Masters and Legends Courses at Lionhead Golf and Country Club for the largest tournament of its kind in Canada. With single digit temperatures in the air and a bone chilling wind that made it seem colder than that, the two winning teams went low, into the 50s for their victories.

On the Legends Course, the team of; Bruce Rogerson, Head Teaching Professional at the Rick Smith Golf Academy at Legends on the Niagara; David Miller, the Head Professional at Hamilton G&CC and Gary Jeffery, the Head Teaching Professional at Golf Town Barrie fired an impressive 14-under par, 58 to win the $3,000 first place cheque by two strokes. Two teams finished T2 at 12-under, 60 including; Alf Callowhill, Colin Murray and Ron Kenesky on one squad and Danny King, Michael McMahon and Gary Boyce on the other, while there was a four-way tie for fourth at 11-under 61.

Rogerson and Jeffery, who finished T2 earlier this year at the Head Pro/Head Pro Championship, added Miller, who finished T2 at the Spring Championship and the trio put together an eagle, 12 birdies and five pars to get to 14-under. While they started the day with a birdie on No. 17 as part of the shotgun start, they made par on the next four holes before catching fire with an eagle and a great string of birdies from No. 9 to 16 to close out the round.

“We just wanted to finish and get out of the cold,” Miller quipped. “We knew if we could get to 12-under we would be in the hunt.” For all three, it was their first win in a PGA of Ontario event this season. “Everyone contributed and we made more than our fair share of putts,” Jeffery added.

On the Masters course, they went to a playoff and then a shootout from 150 yards as four teams posted 13-under, 59. Two teams - David Gourlie, Sean Burke and John Moon and Steve Rodriguez, Kevan Goble and Dustin Timlin dropped out after failing to make birdie putts as they replayed No. 18 in the playoff. In the shootout, the team of Brad Pemberton from Dalewood Golf and Curling Club, Gordon Burns from Golden Ridge Golf Range and Alex Green from Granite Golf Club narrowly beat out Mike Skimson, Chris Wehrle and Mike Turner for the victory that ended eight hours after the opening tee shots.

“There was nobody that we wanted to kick off the team. Everyone will be getting an invite back next year,” Green said of the round that featured 13 birdies. In the shootout they didn’t know who won until both teams came to the green to see where the balls landed. “We thought we lost for sure, their shots were right at the pin, so we’ll take the victory,” Pemberton added.
