Team Ontario leads 2013 Titleist Cup Matches by two points after day one

For Immediate Release

October 17, 2013

TORONTO, ON – The 2013 Titleist Cup is ripe for the picking as only two points separate Team Ontario and Team Quebec heading into Friday singles’ matches at Weston Golf and Country Club.

Team Ontario threw it into overdrive Thursday morning convincingly winning five or six best-ball matches to open the annual two-day championship that pits the top 12 players from the PGA of Ontario against the 12 best players from the PGA of Quebec. In the afternoon alternate shot matches, Team Ontario hit a speed bump as Team Quebec found some momentum to win four of the six matches to narrow Ontario’s lead to two points - 7 to 5.

After two consecutive losses to Team Quebec at Pinegrove CC in 2012 and The Toronto Golf Club in 2011, Team Ontario is looking to return to winning form with Ken Tarling leading the charge as the new team captain. “There is a lot of golf to be played Friday, 12 points up for grabs, so it should be a great day of golf with some tight matches that will go right down to the wire,” said Tarling. He teamed up with Dave Wettlaufer to win the morning match 3&2 over Marc Girouard and Serge Thivierge, before the Quebec team bounced back to win the afternoon battle 1-up over Tarling and Wettlaufer.

The Ontario teams of Ian Doig and Scott Cowx and Brian McCann and Brian Hadley each won both their morning and afternoon matches defeating Hocan Olsson and Daniel Santerre (5&4 and 5&4) and Vincent Cacchione and Yanick Laforest (4&3 and 3&2) respectively. Leading the Team Quebec charge Daniel Talbot and Martin Plante won both their matches over Matt Peavoy and Dan Greenwood 3&2 in the morning and 2-up in the afternoon.

“We’re going to have to play well Friday to win it,” said Cowx, who has been on two losing teams before at Mount Bruno CC and The Toronto GC. “It’s going to be exciting, two points is not a lot. I would like to have a lead of four, five or six points.”

In other action, Billy Walsh and Conor O’Shea started with a 5&4 victory over Dave Levesque and Remi Bouchard, but lost in the afternoon as the Quebec duo won 3&2. It was the same story for Ontario’s Teejay Alderdice and Danny King who won the morning match 4&3 over Eric Laporte and Philippe Mongeau, before the Quebec team evened the score with a 4&2 win in the afternoon.

“This morning our guys were a little shaky. To lose five matches was unbelievable,” said Team Quebec Captain Eric Laporte. “The guys from Ontario got off to a better start and we didn’t seem to respond. For the afternoon matches I told our guys they’re good players, to battle hard and that’s what they did to get us back in it. I don’t know what going to happen on Friday. Both teams have great players and there will be some great matches. Who will win I don’t know.”

As the rain started to fall, the teams enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Weston G&CC sponsored by Titleist and FootJoy before heading off to plan strategies for Friday’s matches. “We’re really looking forward to tomorrow’s matches,” said Mike Rowan, Eastern Canadian Sales Leader for Acushnet Canada, Titleist and FootJoy. “Team Quebec really narrowed the gap with some stellar play Thursday afternoon and it will be exciting to see who can come through with the victory on Friday.”

Team Ontario needs 5.5 points to win the 2013 Titleist Cup Matches, while Team Quebec needs 7 points to retain the title.
