TORONTO, ON - Team Ontario thumped Team Quebec by a final score of 16 to 8 to win the 2013 Titleist Cup Matches at Weston Golf & Country Club on Friday.

Led by rookie Captain Ken Tarling and Vice-Captain Keir Smith, Team Ontario improved upon its 7 to 5, two-point lead from day one, as they won nine of 12 matches on Friday to win the annual matches between the top players from the PGA of Ontario and PGA of Quebec for the first time since 2010.

“We certainly had a very experienced group on this year’s team,” Tarling said. “To me it felt like we had one of the strongest teams we have ever put together. It was a terrific team effort. The Thursday morning matches really put us in a strong position (up 5-1) and gave us a lot of confidence. We never trailed and we had some excellent performances from our rookies and assistants.”

Four of the 12 Team Ontario members enjoyed perfect 3-0 records including; rookie Brian McCann, Scott Cowx, Brian Hadley and Ian Doig who played until the very last hole to secure his victory over Daniel Talbot as the remainder of the field watched on at No. 18.

“It’s always awesome to win,” Doig said. “I was able to enjoy the final match over the last few holes, once the boys had won it. I lost a little focus out there and let Daniel back in the match before I refocused to get the win.” Smith, who played a pivotal role as vice-captain, noted the Weston G&CC, its members and staff led by Head Professional Colin Imrie embraced the competition and looked after the players

In the Senior Division, Dave Wettlaufer went out first against Marc Girouard and earned a 1-up victory to start the day, while Serge Thivierge battled Tarling all the way to win 1-up for an early victory for Team Quebec. In the Assistants’ Division, McCann defeated Yanick Laforest 2&1 in an up-and-down affair, while Mr. 59, Brian Hadley nipped Vincent Cacchione 2&1.

In the Regular Division, Dave Levesque won Team Quebec’s second match taking down Bill Walsh 4&3, while Remi Bouchard earned his team’s final point of the day with a solid 4&3 effort over Conor O’Shea.

Team Ontario victories went to: Danny King 2&1 over Martin Plante, Scott Cowx 4&3 over Philippe Mongeau, Matt Peavoy 5&4 over Hocan Olsson, Teejay Alderdice 7&6 over Daniel Santerre, Dan Greenwood 6&4 over Team Quebec Captain Eric Laporte and Doig 1-up on Talbot.

“It’s a great experience. I can tell you it’s a lot more fun to be on the winning side,” said Peavoy, who picked up a win on Friday, after going 0-2 on the opening day. It was also his first team victory after tasting defeat on two previous occasions.

On No. 8, Cowx posted what could possibly be the first-ever hole-in-one during the Titleist Cup Matches with a great shot that rolled off a slope and into the cup while Ted Manning, Kevin Purcell and Phil Kavanagh cheered as they saw it go in. “I think it helped galvanize the team,” Cowx said with a smile as be bought players a drink in the clubhouse after the round. “It certainly was a turning-point for me; because I had just won No. 7 and I went on to win No. 9 as well.”

Team Ontario now has 14 wins, while Team Quebec maintains a healthy lead with 23 victories. No decision has been made on a location for the 2014 that are slated for a club in Quebec.
