BARRIE, ON - Yesterday the PGA of Ontario brought the Golfing Buddies Women’s Championship to the beautiful Settlers’ Ghost Golf Club in Barrie, Ontario.  This was the first year that the ladies will be competing over a two-day championship and some of the best female golfers in the association came out and put on a show for spectators and members of the host facility.

After the first day of competition, two shared the lead (Alexa Kim and Maggie Trainor) and only three strokes separated the entire field which set up nicely for an intense race to the finish.  Day two was gloomy and overcast; clouds making little room for the sun but that didn’t stop Jennifer Jaszek from shining.  “I didn’t have a number in mind coming into the second day,” Jaszek said after the round.  “I just wanted to keep my swing consistent, play smart, stay out of trouble, and use what the course was giving me.”  She did just that carding two birdies on her way to an even-par 72, leap-frogging the leaders capturing her third PGA of Ontario Women’s Championship title, and the $1000 prize.

Mary-Pat Quilty, who has three PGA of Ontario Women’s titles of her own, is the director of golf at Settlers’ Ghost and shared the low round of the tournament with Jaszek on Thursday.  Quilty has always been a great ambassador for ladies golf and mentioned after the tournament, “We’ve always been a big supporter of ladies events, hosting a couple of CN Tour and PGA of Ontario events.  It’s great…I think our course is designed really well for the lady professionals.  I like to give back, and I like to play in the events too.”  The Women’s Championship always has a great atmosphere for the ladies to get together, share laughs and reconnect with old friends.  Quilty was exited about the new two-day format of the tournament and is looking forward to it garnering more support from more of the female professionals.  “I know we get busy and don’t play as much as we would like but we need to get the message out to our fellow professionals, and say you don’t need to be intimidated.  It doesn’t matter what you shoot.  What matters is you come out, you try your best, you learn from each other and share laughs after the round.  Nobody is pointing fingers saying ‘you came last or you came first’, we all love this game and love getting together.”  The next stop on the PGA of Ontario Women’s Tour is the Fall Championship on September 23-24 at the Golf Club at Lora Bay and The Georgian Bay Club.
